GravDuro Kids: A New Addition for 2026

GravDuro Kids will take place on Saturday, 30 May to kick off the weekend’s action ahead of the main event. Young riders can look forward to a true cross-country racing experience, following the same rules and structure used in the Western Province School Series. The course will feature a 4 – 6 km loop, with distances and race durations determined by age-group timing to ensure fair and exciting competition.

Throughout the day, multiple races will unfold on our purpose-built XCO course, which starts and finishes at the Elgin Grabouw Country Club. As a CSA-sanctioned event, GravDuro Kids will attract many of the strongest school riders from across the Western Province series, promising a full day of energy, skill, and competitive spirit.

Race Day and Race Schedule

Laps will be confirmed by the appointed Chief Commissaire, and these may be adjusted as needed on the day. Please note that if you intend to practice on Friday, you are required to have a number board fitted to your bike. Prize giving for each category will take place shortly after that category has completed its race.

The Format Explained

The GravDuro Kids event will run on a classic cross-country racing format, closely following the structure and rules of the Western Province School Series to ensure a familiar and fair competitive environment. Young riders will take on a 4 – 6 km loop, with race distances and timing adjusted according to each age group to provide the right balance of challenge and excitement. Throughout the day, multiple races will be staged on the dedicated XCO course that starts at the Elgin Grabouw Country Club, giving participants a true taste of structured, off-road racing. As a CSA-sanctioned event, the format guarantees a professionally managed race experience and will attract leading school riders from across the Western Province series, creating a vibrant and competitive day of youth cycling.

The Timing Explained

GravDuro Kids races will be professionally timed by Myriad Events, ensuring accurate and reliable results throughout the day. Each age group will complete a set number of laps on the 4–6 km XCO course, with final lap counts confirmed by the Chief Commissaire before the start of each race. Riders’ number boards will be scanned as they cross timing points, allowing the system to capture start times, lap times, and finish times with precision.

Because multiple races run across the day, the timing system automatically tracks each category separately, ensuring that every rider’s performance is recorded correctly. Once riders finish their final lap, their overall time is logged immediately and processed for quick results publishing. With Myriad Events overseeing this process, participants and parents can expect accurate race data, smooth timing operations, and clear final results at the end of each race.

Regulations

Helmets and Kit

We encourage schools to arrive in their own distinctive, branded kit. Please note the following key rules:

Helmets must be worn at all times.
Sleeveless shirts are not permitted.
Cameras may not be mounted on helmets or worn on the chest.
Riders should wear their official school cycling kit or school sports kit to represent their school.

Number Boards

Team managers, teachers, or school representatives can collect their riders’ number boards from the registration table from 06:30 on Saturday.

Number boards are issued according to the rider’s category.
If a number board is lost, a replacement fee of R100 applies.
Riders must bring their existing number boards to the event and should remember to bring cable ties. New riders without boards will need to purchase one, and lost boards will be replaced at a cost of R100.

Tech & Feed Zone

Schools are encouraged to set up their gazebos within the designated tech and feed zone to create a supportive space for their riders. Each school may position one primary gazebo facing the course, while any additional gazebos should be placed behind it to keep the area organised. Open fires are strictly prohibited for safety reasons. Schools using gas to warm meals must ensure they have a fire extinguisher readily available and easily accessible at all times.
